What are those things?

Maybe no one cares, but when we were flying over Nevada, there were these squares cut into the terrain. I have no idea what they are. If you can tell me, you are the winner!!

They usually cut trees in straight lines for "fire lines" or treeless zones where a fire can burn itself out. But these squares appear to be logging areas. Loggers can only cut in areas where they have the rights. In this case, maybe the logging rights were purchased in large squares like this.
